To start, hand a spectator a sealed prediction which you never touch again. You then lay a sheet of newspaper on the table and show two playing cards, one "solid" and one containing two holes. You set the one with holes on the paper and explain that only a single word or two can be seen through either hole at any time. The card is slid back and forth across the newspaper, showing different words appearing in the holes. This, you explain, will be used to have the spectator select a single word "by chance". You lay the solid playing card sideways on top of the one with holes. It covers the top hole. Holding the two cards in this way, you move them across the newspaper. The spectator is able to see the words changing in the bottom hole. You invite the spectator to stop you anywhere on the page. When he does, you read the word in the bottom hole. "You have stopped me at the word ____. Now, by chance, what word did you stop me in at the top hole?" The solid card is removed and the spectator reads the word showing through the top hole. You invite him to open the prediction you gave him at the beginning. It says "you will stop me at ____!" (It is the exact word showing through the top hole.) The cards are left on the table along with the newspaper. If anyone is curious and examines them they will find nothing suspicious.
