This method of divining a spectator's chosen word was first shown to me a decade ago by a friend who had seen a friend of his doing it. I have since seen it done by a score of people, all of them asking for the first letter of the word, and all needing to hold the dictionary to achieve their end. I have taken the effect to the point that neither the first letter nor the dictionary is necessary to reveal the selected word.
